crack how to:
install video-to-gif.exe and start it, and look through the registration shemes.
it begins with a registration window, and there is a registration window when you convert a file.
video to gif will write 'unregistered version' over the created gif animation.
close the video to gif executable once you see how the registration works.
run toolsPEiD-0.95-20081103PEiD.exe to find out how the executable is packaged.
in the top right of the 'peid v0.95' window click the browse button and open 'Video to GIF.exe'.
video to gif is compressed with UPX 0.89.6 - 1.02 / 1.05 - 2.90 -> Markus & Laszlo.
you'll need to decompress video to gif with a upx program in order to disassemble it.
copy 'Video to GIF.exe' from program files to the folder toolsupx307w.
this upx utility will overwrite the existing file, either compressing or decompressing.
the batch file 'upx uncompress.bat' is written for 'Video to GIF.exe', run it to decompress the file.
to use the batch file for a different executable, open with notepad and change the second line.
a file name without spaces in command prompt isn't quoted,
a file name with spaces or special characters needs quotes.
there is more information about using upx307w in the upx.html file.
once the file is decompressed you can debug it normally.
rename the file to something like 'Video to GIF2.exe', copy the decompressed file back into the installation folder.
for disassembling use toolsodbg110OLLYDBG.EXE, run ollydbg and open the uncompressed 'video to gif' file.
you'll need to find the udd and plugin directories for olly from the options -> appearance tabs.
after you've loaded 'video to gif', click the play button once, wait for olly to analyze the file.
right click in the main thread window, click search for -> all referenced text strings.
in the 'text strings referenced' window, scroll to the top, click the top line, right click search for text.
from your encounter with the program so far it would be a good guess to search for register.
deselect case sensitive and click ok, you should end up at 'registerautomation'.
you'll want to do a few more searches to become familiar with what's in the assembly.
right click and select 'search next', and search several more times, pressing ctrl L will also search next.
you will eventually find 0063B38D MOV EDX,Video_to.0063B564 ASCII "Register successful !".
this sounds good, just what you need. double click the line and you'll be there in the main thread window.
two lines up you'll see an easy jump, 0063B388 je, press ctrl E, change the 74 29 to 74 00,
this changes the jump destination and simply jumps to the next line.
the change results in 'register successful' when you apply any name and serial.
right click in the main thread window, select 'copy to executable' -> 'all modifications'.
select 'copyall' in the next window, and then right click in the window after that and select save file.
you can overwrite that file or name it something like 'Video to GIF2a.exe'.
enter a name and serial, i use Virtual and 1234567890. anything works.
but the register window still appears, so it's a near miss, click next time and exit 'video to gif'.
back to the 'text strings referenced' window, search for something that will solve this situation.
pressing F6 in olly will bring the text strings window to the front, maybe search register some more.
since it's near the end of the strings references it's easy to scroll through the lines and see what's there.
you'll begin to see some setup.ini strings, which happens to be in the program installation directory.
if you've looked through the file already you'll know that it contains 'key code' and 'user name'.
these may be something to change, somehow, look through the strings until you're familiar with them.
you'll scroll by "unregistered version", maybe something around that will need to be changed.
finally there is a section with the setup.ini file and 'registered to', this must be it.
double click the 'registered to' line to arrive at 0064A708 MOV EDX,Video_to.0064AABC ; ASCII "Registered to ".
you'll see a couple of jumps a few lines up, they work into or over the 'registered to' line.
the JLE at 0064A6B7 will jump to 0064AC70, bypassing the 'registered to' scheme,
we can change this by clicking line 0064A6B7 and pressing the space bar, replace 0064AC70 with 0064A6CE,
0064A6CE is the first line after the conditional jumps which lead past the 'registered to' line.
changing the JLE to JMP will ensure that the registation is successful, i left it as JLE.
apparently this enables the registration to display the registered name, the info is probably stored in the registry.
right click in the main thread window and save the 'video to gif' executable again, give it a try, it should work.
now you can compress this crack with the upx tool, edit the upx compress batch to make sure the file name matches.
the 'upx -7' compression setting matches the original file size, there are other settings available.
once it's compressed, copy it to the program installation folder and check to see if it works.
the about button shows 'registered to' noone, and asks for registration when you convert a video to gif.
changing the compatibility settings privilege level has an effect on registration name displayed.
enter any name and key code when 'video to gif' prompts, and it will register, fully functional.
