The prefix TWV is generally followed by a genre number, a letter indicating the key (in some cases), and a work number. The genre number indicates the general type or medium of the work. A major key is in upper case, a minor key in lower case. The second number is the work's number within the genre. But now we can say that this was surely the most mistaken of all mistaken judgments in the whole of music history! Our Vol. 3 again offers evidence in his favor. In his Flute Concerto TWV 51: D4 Telemann creates a concerto of great appeal verging on a musical »idyll« despite the solo part’s limited tonal resources. In contrast, the following Oboe Concerto TWV 51: c1, a work maintaining what is mostly a gloomy and melancholy tone, produces a shocking effect with its extreme dissonance repeated several times right at the beginning. The four other concertos selected once again exhibit this composer’s immense stylistic versatility in their individuality and instrumental variety.
