Tonight we meet mysterious banker Mr Merdle and his opulent high-society circle. Merdle later emerges as a vital cog in the larger plot (and carries eerie echoes of the present day), but for now Anton Lesser has all of two lines to say, and makes the most of them. You have to love a production that hires the likes of Lesser for such a cameo. Another all-too-brief presence is Annette Crosbie as "Mr F's aunt": she gets to roar the priceless line, "You can't make a head and brains out of a brass knob if there's nothing in it!" Meanwhile, Amy Dorrit faces an emotional crisis, every beat of which is written on Claire Foy's extraordinarily open face. With so much fl orid acting talent in this drama (Amanda Redman and Geoffrey Whitehead also join the cast tonight), it's easy to overlook just how good she is.
