In a period piece it's hard for half-hour episodes to build up a head of dramatic steam, but tonight's morsel of Dickens has to be the best so far. The stately advance of the story reaches a turning point, notably in the fortunes of jug-eared John Chivery, the lovable turnkey of the Marshalsea debtors' prison and ardent admirer of Amy Dorrit. Russell Tovey has been wonderful as Chivery, making comic hay with his handful of lines, but his scene here by the riverside with Amy is a different kettle of fish altogether - have your handkerchiefs at the ready. That's not the only high, either: Tom Courtenay hits form as Amy's magnificently self-absorbed father; Andy Serkis as French murderer Rigaud returns to send shivers down the spine with his every moment on screen; and at the centre of the turning plot, Matthew Macfadyen's underplaying as Arthur is a quiet delight.
