Springs and oscillators
We made all the twanging sounds of the Spring Reverb FX with only vintage hardware: a D&R
Stereo Reverb unit, a Bandive Great British Spring reverb, and an Atlantex Rooverb. To get
the raw twang of the Rooverb, we opened it up and flicked, stroked and whacked the springs
within. In the pack, you can find them in both raw versions and processed through a
Moogerfooger MF-101 Lowpass Filter and MF-104M Analog Delay.

The Basic Oscillator FX were created using the most rudimentary single-oscillator
analogue synths we could find: a Korg monotron, a Gakken SX-150, and a Yamaha
CS05. We also did some very simple patching in the eurorack modular with just an oscillator
being modulated by an LFO – no filter, no amplitude modulation.

Percussive and game FX
Ring modulation was a mainstay of FX, right from the early tinkerings by the pioneers of the
BBC Radiophonic Workshop, through to more advanced prog rock signal-shaping magic, right
the way to today’s digital dabbling. For the Ring Mod FX, we turned once again to our stock
of Moogerfooger pedals, grabbing the MF-102 Ring Modulator and whipping some guitar and
MiniBrute signals into a crazy spin. We liked the sounds so much that we couldn’t resist adding
some more unusual ring mod FX, created using our Eurorack modular synth.

The Percussion FX came from the Synare 3 and Amdek percussion synths – both totally
analogue. An 80s Peavey reverb unit provided the gated reverbs, and the dub hits were again
soaked in tape delay (from the Roland Space Echo and Watkins Copicat) and spring reverb.
The Classic Computer FX samples are an extra-special treat, covering the early days of
8-bit FX sounds. They were made using an Amiga 500, a GameBoy (running a nanoloop
cart), a Sega Mega Drive, and various simple synth patches on the Eurorack modular. These
sounds really capture the bleepy, 8-bit sound of early computer game FX, so be careful if you’re
prone to flashbacks of your days spent fighting a giant pixellated octopus.

Noise, dubs & Radiophonics
We also got to work on some characterful Noise Sweeps that’ll add a retro tone to many
a track. We got these from a Roland Juno-60 and SH-101, and tried to keep them strictly
old-school by just sweeping the filters and modulating them with an LFO. Oh, and the
Juno-60, SH-101, SH-09 and Yamaha CS-5 were also all used to create some classic synth
burbles and bleeps.

The Dub Siren samples were made using a combination of the handmade simple Synthbox
and the ever-faithful Korg monotron. Again, these were left very simple and processed
through the same delay chain, then squeezed through some twangy spring reverbs.
With the Radiophonic Workshop-style FX, we tried to stay as faithful as we could to their
lo-fi approach, so we used filtered tape delay feedback and odd sounds from the spring
reverbs. We also used some very basic patches from the modular using just an oscillator and
LFO, as well as an occasional multi-mode filter.
