MARY AND MAX. Tanti e tanti anni fa, c'era una volta in Australia Mary, una bambina di 8 anni, timida, imbranata, con un padre assente e una madre alcolista. Nello stesso momento, dall'altra parte del mondo, ossia a New York, c'era una volta Max, un quarantenne obeso, paranoico, affetto dalla sindrome di Asperger, una malattia mentale piuttosto simile all'autismo...
Un bel giorno, la bimba decide di avere un amico di penna, per capire come si vive al di là dei suoi ristretti confini e per scacciare la solitudine. E, per caso, sulle pagine gialle americane sceglierà proprio il nome di Max...

Ispirata a una storia vera, nascerà in questo modo una delle più intense, commoventi, spassose e divertenti amicizie di penna mai viste al cinema, non soltanto d'animazione. Oltre 20 anni della vita di due autentici "diversi" vissuti riga per riga e narrati con leggerezza e profondità come mai si era visto prima. Un capolavoro assoluto che ha spalancato le porte al cinema d'animazione australiano e al genio di Adam Elliot, già premio Oscar nel 2003 per il corto Harvie Krumpet.

Vincitore d'importantissimi premi internazionali e considerato fra i più straordinari film tout court degli ultimi vent'anni, non è mai apparso in Italia perché, si sa, qui da noi i cartoni animati possono esser soltanto per i bambini...

Mary Daisy Dinkle is a lonely 8-year-old living in Mount Waverley, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia in 1976. Her mother Vera is a slovenly alcoholic, and her father Noel is a stoic taxidermy enthusiast. Mary is plain and bespectacled, and her only friend is her pet rooster. Mary was told by her late grandfather that babies are found in the bottoms of beer glasses. Wondering how babies are born in America, she decides to write to an American to find out. She picks a name randomly out of the phone book: Max Jerry Horowitz.
Max is an overweight, 44-year-old New York City resident. He has odd mannerisms that make it difficult for him to relate to others. He lives in a small apartment with an assortment of pets, and his only socialization is his weekly Overeaters Anonymous meetings. He receives Mary's letter, which tells him about herself, and includes a small self-portrait and a chocolate bar. At first confused by the letter, he decides to write back...

Un grandissimo corto d'animazione, vincitore dell'Oscar 2003, che ha portato alle stelle il nome di Adam Elliott, animatore e regista di indubbio talento. Per la prima volta con i sottotitoli italiani, per poterne apprezzare ogni istante.

Harvie Krumpet is an Australian clay animation made in Melbourne written, directed and animated by Adam Elliot and produced by Melanie Coombs of(Melodrama Pictures). This short (22 min and 7 sec) film won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 2003, in addition to numerous festival awards and the 2004 Australian Film Institute Best Short Animation award. It was also included in the Animation Show of Shows.
