Il film racconta la storia di un ragazzo che, nel Giappone medievale, si propone di imparare la magia da un Sennin, un ascetico eremita che vive su una montagna, per sconfiggere una banda di predoni guidati da una strega malvagia.
La storia originale, assai più complessa, fu trasformata in una fase avanzata della produzione in un semplice scontro tra buoni e cattivi, perché i dirigenti Toei volevano sfruttare il successo dei loro film jidaigeki (live action), che proponeva appunto la medesima vicenda con gli stessi protagonisti. La decisione fece serpeggiare un notevole risentimento da parte dei disegnatori. Da rilevare alcune scene del film, come il banchetto degli animali, disegnata da Yasuji Mori, oltre alla salamandra gigante e allo scheletro della strega, a opera di Yasuo Otsuka. Proprio qui Otsuka, nel suo primo incarico come animatore, disegna scene chiave che si distinguono da quelle del resto del film con la loro attenzione ai dettagli e il realismo rigoroso nel movimento.

Il film fu il primo anime ad essere arrivato in Occidente (Usa, 1961) e giunse in Italia per un festival d'animazione, di cui parlerò nella RECENSIONE, anche se non conosciamo nulla di un eventuale doppiaggio.

Magic Boy, known in Japan as Shonen Sarutobi Sasuke, is a full length animated film released on December 25, 1959. Released as Toei Animation's second theatrical anime, the film was the first ever anime film to be released in theaters in North America on June 22, 1961.
A young Japanese boy climbs a mountain in search of a magic wizard. The youth finds the wizard, and is tutored by him. Reinforced with magic powers, the boy eventually fights, and defeats the evil witches of down under.

In the English language version, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer left most of the original songs with Japanese language lyrics in the English version. Since the creators of the English version preferred to liken Sasuke to the public perception of samurai, who were viewed as heroic, as opposed to the ninja, who were viewed as "sinister spies and assassins," MGM's publicity incorrectly claimed that The Adventures of the Little Samurai was the Japanese title of the film.
