Description

Sin. Secrets. Shame. Solitude.
"Worthy" explores these themes via the life of a 15-year-old rape victim in World War II outport Newfoundland while this island was still a dominion of Great Britain and while U-boats circled like hawks in the nearby North Atlantic ocean.
"Worthy" is a "detailed and convincing portrait of a conflicted Newfoundland family in the 1940s, set in a rugged, salty and storm-lashed setting that comes clearly to the senses," wrote one reviewer. "Events unfold with satisfying suspense and a good grasp of how and when to add fresh complications to the mix."
Author, Bobbie Smith, exposes the deep-seated belief systems in isolated families and communities that trap women. Smith exposes a dark era for North American women who became pregnant and were sent away to 'homes' for unwed mothers to 'make this go away.'
As the world has seen in the horrific stories of the Magdelene Laundries, and the most recent discovery of an 800-body grave in Tuam, Ireland (2014), so many women, children and their families are affected by these tragedies, which may still be unearthed. Smith has now added a fresh story which aims at demonstrating female strength of character in attempting to overcome major struggles against a society bent on inflicting shame, all the while, revealing the critical role that the Dominion of Newfoundland (which later joins Canada in 1949) played in World War II for the US, Canada and Britain.
