William Mundy - Sacred Choral Music - H Christophers, The Sixteen (1988) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 262.03 MB)
Description
William Mundy was by all accounts one of the most successful late 16th century composers in England. His music for the Catholic service, in Latin, has an architeectural strength that remained admired to modern times, while his anthem, "O Lord, the maker of all things," became so popular that for a while it was actually ascribed to Henry VIII (who was in actual fact a poor composer, at best). He wrote in different styles, for the Henrian Reformation, the Edwardian stabilization, the Marian Catholic reaction and the Elizabethan reentrenchment, without any apparent difficulty at requirements for changes to style or content. Perhaps none of this mattered as much to him as worship through music. Certainly there are worse ways to express religion.
