Watson & the Countess 01 The Baskerville Curse

Book 1 in a series of chronological stand-alone plots.

England 1899. Ten years after Holmes and Watson solve the case of the Baskerville hound, Dr Watson receives an invitation to return to Baskerville Hall. The night before his departure he meets a Ukrainian countess who claims to be the daughter of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler. She is vain, rich, fiercely intelligent, and she ends up accompanying him to Devon. The same characters from the original story have re-assembled at Baskerville Hall and it appears that someone is out to destroy Sir Henry Baskerville. When the baronet drowns in the Grimpen Mire a spate of anonymous letters is believed to have induced him to kill himself. Several further deaths follow in quick succession. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna are not sure whether the deaths are accidents, suicides or murders, and they soon find themselves out of their depth. They even question whether they are merely playing to their own vanity as the best friend and illegitimate daughter of the greatest detective who ever lived.



Book 1 serves as an introduction to the pairing of Dr Watson and Countess V, therefore I have chosen to rework a story familiar to most readers of the genre - one of Conan Doyle’s most enduring works. It is the only plot to borrow from ACD. All subsequent plots are original.



Watson & the Countess 02 The Lammas Curse

Scotland 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Varvara Volodymyrovna visit the Scottish Borders to solve the Lammermoor Golf Course murders. Lord Cruddock is staging a tournament to promote his new golf course but someone is killing-off the golfers.



Watson & the Countess 03 The Penny Dreadful Curse

England 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna travel to the city of York. Someone is killing-off the authors who write cheap but popular penny dreadfuls, and Inspector Bird, a fervent admirer of Dr Watson, needs help.



Watson & the Countess 04 The Clairvoyant Curse

England 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna travel on the SS Pleiades during its inaugural voyage down the Irish Sea from Glasgow to Biarritz. On board are a bizarre handful of passengers travelling to a World Spiritualist Congress. When Madame Moghra (the most famous medium in all of Britain) is found dead and Dr Watson is accused of homicidal somnambulism Countess V must unmask the real killer in order to spare her fellow sleuth being charged with murder once they reach the French port.



Watson & the Countess 05 The Curse of the Singing Wolf

France 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna are holidaying in Biarritz when a fire breaks out in the kitchen of their petit hotel. The hotel’s owner (a retired opera singer known as the Singing Wolf) invites the handful of guests to stay at her isolated mountain retreat in a remote area rife with wolves and lawless brigands led by the murderous outlaw, Sarazan.



Watson & the Countess 06 The Curse of the Grand Guignol

France 1899. Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna are drawn into the world of fin de siècle Paris by a series of macabre murders, propelling them into the naturalistic horror plays of the Grand Guignol. Each horrific murder performed on stage is mysteriously and simultaneously re-enacted on the bohemian streets of Montmartre.



Watson & the Countess 07 The Curse of Christmas

London 1899. Rumours of resurrection-men strike fear into the hearts of Londoners, prompting Dr Watson and Countess Volodymyrovna to investigate the ghostly goings-on in the unconsecrated cemetery known as Crossbones. In reality, Mycroft Holmes has recruited them to thwart an anonymous blackmailer - who has plans to embarrass the Prince Regent by linking him to a scandal in a Southwark brothel.
