By 1983 this new form of Rock/Metal,more a hybrid of clued up songwriting and finely honed guitar skills, was being melted and re-forged into something much stronger, bands like Black Sabbath had given a nod to a darker direction, intense metallic guitar sounds with lyrics less concerned with drinking Jack Daniels and shagging girls and more concerned with probing the darker corners of the human psyche and our hopes and fears for the future. And that brings us to Warrior. Born in the melting pot of the L.A glam metal boom of 82/83, Warrior were a breed apart from their contemporaries, they dressed in uniforms that made them appear like they had just stepped off a starship from the future, and whilst there was some 'big' hairstyles present, their music and lyrical content marked them out as something very special. Their Sound, all Jackson flying Vee's and Floyd Rose Whammy bars was simply astounding, bone crunching riffs that smashed you across your face with blow after blow, whilst vocalist Parramore McCarty screamed his lungs out about tortured serpents and immortal enemies come to challenge man, Warrior's lyrics conjured images of a war ravaged earth devastated by disease and toyed with ideas of Genetic manipulation of human beings, perhaps the lyrics to 'Fighting for the Earth' have never been so appropriate as they are today, listen to them and you will see what I mean. Warrior never bettered this record and in creating it laid a benchmark that defined the genre of 'future metal' truly groundbreaking in its way and utterly unforgettable once listened to, the lyrics are thought provoking the musical sensibilities on show display a sharp knowledge of strong hooks and powerful melodies, how Warrior ended up being the also rans of that era is a matter for rock music historians, buy this album and treasure it, it will comfort you when you are alone in the dark.
