Description
Landscapes of England
W. G. Hoskins (1908–1992) was an English local historian who founded the first university department of English local history. His great contribution was in the field of landscape history. Hoskins demonstrated the profound impact of human activity on the evolution of the English countryside in a pioneering book, The Making of the English Landscape. His work has had lasting influence in the fields of local and landscape history, and historical and environmental conservation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_George_Hoskins Hoskins's book, from 1955, was a best seller and explained the shape and nature of England. His TV programmes for the BBC, The Landscapes of England, ran to two series of six episodes each. The first, in 1976, was based on his book, and the second was broadcast in 1978. Six of the twelve episodes have so far (2016) resurfaced on the internet, four from the first series, and two from the second. Perhaps the other six will appear in the future.
