This picture contributed to the urban legend of snuff films, although the concept did not originate with it. The film started out as a low-budget gore film titled Slaughter which was written and directed by the husband-and-wife grindhouse film making team of Michael Findlay and Roberta Findlay. Filmed in Argentina in 1971 on a budget of $30,000, it depicted the actions of a Manson-esque murder cult, filmed mainly in silent due to the actors understanding very little English. The film financier Jack Bravman received an out-of-court settlement from AIP so the latter could use the title for the 1972 Jim Brown film of the same name. The Findlays' film enjoyed a very limited theatrical release. Independent low-budget distributor and sometime producer Allan Shackleton took the film and shelved it for four years—but was inspired to release it with a new ending, unbeknownst to the original filmmakers, after reading a newspaper article in 1975 on the rumor of snuff films produced in South America and decided to cash in on the urban legend. He added a new ending, filmed in a vérité style by Simon Nuchtern, in which a woman is brutally murdered by a film crew, supposedly the crew of Slaughter. The new footage purportedly showed an actual murder, and was spliced onto the end of Slaughter with an abrupt cut suggesting that the footage was unplanned and the murder authentic. This new version of the film was released under the title Snuff, with the tagline "The film that could only be made in South America... where life is CHEAP." Once the film was released, distributor Shackleton reportedly hired fake protesters to picket movie theaters showing the film. This soon became moot when Women Against Pornography began staging real protests, outraged at the film's purported imagery of sexual violence. The group's protest received coverage by such media outlets as the CBS Evening News. Although the film was exposed as a hoax in Variety in 1976, it became popular in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Boston. The rumours persisted that the film showed a real-life murder, and "prompted by complaints and petitions from well-known writers, including Eric Bentley and Susan Brownmiller, and legislators", inspired New York District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the films production —who dismissed the supposedly 'real' murder as "nothing more than conventional trick photography—as is evident to anyone who sees the movie", also reassuring people that the actress being dismembered and killed in the ending of the film "is alive and well", having urged the police to trace her. ********************************* Lager SSadis Kastrat Kommandantur AKA Captive Women II: Orgies of the Damned/ S.S. The plot concerns a Nazi officer who wanted a testicles transplant. The deranged commandant of a Nazi concentration camp learns that one of the doctors is secretly Jewish, so he forces the man to perform a testicle transplant from a virile sergeant onto him, his own having once been bitten off when he tried to rape a Russian woman. Framing this ludicrous spectacle are the usual tasteless scenes, although here they're more offensive morally than visually. Finally the crazed commandant gets hacked to pieces by the female prisoners, who unfortunately didn't get a shot at the film's negative. It gained infamy in the 1980s for its bad-taste sexual and violent content involving, as the title suggests, Nazi human experimentation. The film was banned in some countries, including the United Kingdom, where the film was subject to prosecution as one of the films known as "video nasties", a title used in the press and by campaigners that came to be used for a list of films that could be found obscene under the Obscene Publications Act. Bizarre Magazine, in a 2004 overview of the Naziploitation genre, said the following: "Its advertising campaign, an image of a semi-naked woman hanging upside-down from a crucifix, was instrumental in bringing unwanted attention to the Nasties, although, beyond that, its infamy is unwarranted".A similar view of it was taken by the British Board of Film Classification, who passed it uncut the next year, noting "Despite the questionable taste of basing an exploitation film in a concentration camp, the sexual activity itself was consensual and the level of potentially eroticised violence sufficiently limited". However, in 2008, it was denounced by the Sunday Times and Sunday Express at the time of Holocaust Memorial Day, and cited by MPs Julian Brazier and Keith Vaz as part of their attempts to tighten the film banning system. ************************* Tenebre AKA Tenebrae/Unsane Under the Eyes of the Assassin ************************* Movie Information Release year.........: 1982 Genre................: Horror/Mystery/Thriller IMDb rating..........: 7.1/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084777/ Language.............: English Subtitles............: None Duration.............: 1h 40mn Source...............: DVD R2 Format...............: MPEG-4 Format/Info..........: Base Media File size............: 504 MB Overall bit rate.....: 700 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.5 Dario Argento leaves a distinct and bloody impression with this Italian horror film that took the slasher genre to graphic new limits at the time of its release. Novelist Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) jets into Rome to promote his new book. Simultaneously, a killer obsessed with Neal begins a brutal series of murders that are followed by cryptic notes to the author. Inspector Germani (Giuliano Gemma) questions Neal, who then begins his own investigation into the bizarre case with the help of his assistant, Anne (Daria Nicolodi), and local youth Gianni (Christian Borromeo). Neal and Gianni follow leads to the home of a TV talk-show host (John Steiner), who is axed to death in front of Gianni while Neal is knocked unconscious. As they close in on the killer, flashbacks show the killer's murderous beginnings and an obsession with red shoes. Meanwhile, Neal's publicist, Bullmer (John Saxon), is revealed to be having an affair with the author's ex-lover, Jane (Veronica Lario), making them both potential suspects. Inspector Germani insists that Neal leave town, but even when he does, the killer strikes again, knifing Bullmer in broad daylight. At the same time, Gianni returns to the home of the dead talk-show host and recalls an important detail about the murder. However, he is strangled before he can tell anyone. At her apartment, Jane is brutally slain just as Inspector Germani arrives to discover the murderer's identity, along with the shocking, twist-filled truth behind the entire case. ********** Night School AKA Terror Eyes ********** Movie Information Release year.........: 1981 Genre................: Horror/Mystery/Thriller IMDb rating..........: 4.0/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082812/ Language.............: English Subtitles............: None Duration.............: 1h 28mn Source...............: DVD-R copy original source unknown Format...............: MPEG-4 Format/Info..........: Base Media File size............: 441 MB Overall bit rate.....: 699 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.5 Night School is a slasher film released in 1981 directed by Ken Hughes and starring English actress Rachel Ward in her feature film debut.
