A courtroom thriller from Canada,based on the real-life murder case involving Peter and Christine Demeter in Canada in 1973. I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
(also known as Drop Dead Dearest and Left For Dead) is one of only two films from Canada that made the Video Nasty list. It's even packed with references to "The Canadian Dream",
That's not to say it's not "Nasty". Make no mistake about it, although many have questioned how and why this flick ended up Banned in the UK, I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses is most assuredly... nasty. Or, at least, it qualifies for what the BBFC declared to be "Obscene", questionable as that definition might have been. From the depiction of dead animals (this time in a poultry packing factory) to the implicit combination of sex and death, this one has its fair share of no-nos attached to it.
We start as a beautiful model (Elke Sommer's Magdalene Kruschen) has her head bashed in and is left for dead in her garage. Soon after her husband, Charles Kruschen (Donald Pilon), discovers her body, a media frenzy starts and he goes from grieving widow to suspect to defendant.
The rest of the film takes place in flashback, mostly heard from the witness stand. These start with Charles' escape from Communist Hungary (after dreams of living in Canada) with his friend Gershen Isen (Chuck Shamata) and their subsequent rise to the flashy heights of big Canadian business. Isen falls for his model Magdelene, Charles woos and marries her.But he begins an affair with an even hotter (naked) woman called Pauline Corte (the interestingly named Cindy Girling). Not to be outdone, a naked Magdelene starts an affair with Isen, who is even less attractive than Charles. When all these things come to a head, Magdelene plots to have Charles killed and Charles has all kinds of conversations with Isen about how he might off Magdelene.
This results in a long, long string of "What If-" scenarios in which Magdelene is murdered in various ways, some more graphic than others. Just which one is the real one is pretty much impossible to determine, seeing as how the more we learn, the more we realize that there were all kinds of people with motive in killing one or the other of them. Somehow, even though it was Magdelene that died (in the beginning, no less), the list of possible suspects isn't even cut in half, we soon learn there's even a Serial Killer on the loose and the whole thing could have been just a coincidence.

Camille Keaton, grand-niece of Buster and star of the thriller Cosa Avete Fatto a Solange?, appears here as Jenny, an aspiring novelist who rents a cabin in the Connecticut woods. Three rednecks at a local gas station and a retarded delivery boy seem quite friendly at first, and many viewers wonder just where director Meir Zarchi is going with the story. Then he drops them 200,000 feet right into the center of Hell for the longest, nastiest, and most brutal gang-rape in motion-picture history. Zarchi takes his time with this scene, not for the sake of titillation, but to make the audience feel the absolute horror of Jenny's plight. She is humiliated, sodomized over a rock, and brutally beaten in the middle of the woods.
Then she crawls home, naked and bruised, only to get a repeat performance with her new novel shredded, her stomach kicked, and a bottle rammed violently inside her. The experience leaves Jenny shell-shocked, a cipher completely detached from reality. She hangs the delivery boy from a tree, gorily castrates the ringleader in a bathtub, and dispatches the other two rapists with an axe and an outboard motor. A combination of alchemy, architecture, and horror, director Dario Argento's Inferno is a pulsing thriller filled with murder and supernatural mayhem. The peculiar proceedings are set into motion in both New York and Rome when two young women, Sara (Eleonora Giorgi) and Rose (Irene Miracle), find a book called The Three Mothers, a tome of alchemy written by an architect named Varelli. According to the book, Varelli built a trio of resting places for the Three Mothers, an evil trio whose identities remain at the core of the film's mystery. Rose's brother and Sara's boyfriend is Mark (Leigh McCloskey), a music student in Rome who jets to New York after Sara is murdered and Rose disappears.
He follows up Rose's research on The Three Mothers and, with the help of his sister's neighbor, Elise (Daria Nicolodi), comes to the realization that the building they are in is one of Varelli's.
Along the way, Mark encounters a variety of quirky characters including Elise's butler (Leopoldo Mastelloni), the building's maid (Alida Valli), a cat-hating bookseller named Kazanian (Sacha Pitoeff), and the infirm Professor Arnold (Feodor Chaliapin) and his nurse (Veronica Lazar). After a series of murders and a revelation that the butler and the maid have been plotting to steal Elise's jewels, Mark discovers a secret series of passages within the building. They lead him to its core where he finds the wheelchair-bound Professor Arnold, who explains that he is really the architect Varelli. After a violent struggle, the dying old man confesses to Mark that he is merely a servant to the Mothers. The building begins to burn out of control, but before Mark can escape, he discovers the shocking identity of the Three Mothers.

It's a story about a young couple, Christopher (Bob Belling) and Celia (Jane Ryall), on vacation in Greece. Initially they seem like a normal, fun-loving couple, but very quickly it becomes apparent that there is a screw loose when the couple begin to trap, torture and murder innocent locals in order to
"rid the island of perversion."
Eventually Christopher and Celia are tracked by the police, but only after maiming and raping half a Greek island. It's hilarious, wince-inducing stuff, and thankfully well-filmed. Mastorakis undoubtedly pushes it with the sex and violence, but there is an undoubted charm and naivety to this film that prevents you from turning it off. It's, strangely, very watchable. In fact, no one could accuse Island Of Death of being unwatchable. Questionable - yes. And possibly unlistenable, to some (it's got a very unique soundtrack). But not unwatchable.
