The club first opened in 1907, a year after the devastating earthquake of 1906, and symbolized for many a newly revitalized city. Originally part bordello, the night club would go through several owners, names (Blanco's, The Music Box), and musical offerings before it would reopen in 1972 as The Great American Music Hall. For the next three decades, the stage was used by the likes of Sarah Vaughn, B B King, Duke Ellington, Etta James, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead, and Van Morrison - who said it was his favorite hall. Van, living in Marin County at the time, played at The Great American Music Hall several times a year throughout 1980-1985, before moving mack to Ireland in the mid-Eighties. He returned to play a three-night run in April of 1992. During his shows in the Eighties, Van would often try out new material from his albums and play a few old chestnuts - aloong with some material that would never be released. This tape is a humble compilation of the vibrant music that resonated in that hall. Van Morrison Tape Tree Volume 8: A Big Hand For The Reverend Fame (1989-1991) Side 1 63. These Are The Days 64.
