ABOUT SUFI MUSIC
Spanning across almost every continent and over a millennium, the Sufi movement has influenced various cultures and ways of life. Besides being a strong philosophical and spiritual guide for its followers, the discipline has also gone on to influence art through way of dance, poetry and perhaps most notably, music. Not far behind is the fine art of Sufi whirling which leaves participants and viewers alike mesmerized. A dynamic form of meditation practiced by the Dervishes, it is said that the whirling signifies the leaving behind of the ego and the uniting of the mind, body and soul with a divine power. Sufi music has had many talented exponents who have gone on to spread the beauty of this art form across the world through popular culture. The most popular form of Sufi music is the Qawwali which originated in Persia in the eighth century. In this form of expression too, the performer and the listener, similar to Sufi whirling, feel transported to another state of being. This form in singing is almost always linked to the spiritual and artistic aspects of life. Sufi music follows a specific psychological process which starts off with the singing of the song quite similarly to any other forms of musical expression. After this, the worlds are repeatedly sung over and over again with different variations which allow listeners to interpret the words in a different light. After a while however, even these words cease to have any meaning and it provides the ideal setting for the listener or participant to move to a state of spiritual enlightenment. The lyrics-are normally a healthy mix of Punjabi and Urdu and traditionally, this art is passed down in families from generation to generation.
