Description
UN SOIR, UN TRAIN -- 1968 -- Andre Delvaux
AKA: One Night...a Train (from the novel by Johan Daisne) .............................................................................. Camera: Ghislain Cloquet Music: Frederic Devreese Cast: Yves Montand..........Mathias Bremen Anouk Aimee...........Anne Adriana Bogdan........Moira Hector Camerlynck.....Hernhutter Francois Beukelaers...Val .............................................................................. STORY: Mathias is a rather self-centred professor of linguistics at a Flemish university. His relationship with a younger French woman Anne is breaking apart, both from Mathias' lack of of understanding, and the strain of isolation as a result of local prejudice against francophones in this part of Belgium. One evening after a quarrel Mathias boards a train to deliver a lecture at a neighbouring university. Anne accompanies him, but when Mathias wakes from a nightmarish sleep she has vanished. For some unknown reason the train has stopped in the middle of the snowbound landscape. Then Mathias leaves the train accompanied by two companions: in the distance there appears to be a village. Further details are given at the IMDB address below, but perhaps you would prefer to watch the film first. ............................................................................ This is a striking film visually, showing strong influence of the Belgian surrealists Magritte and Paul Delvaux (his father), and the influence of Kafka can also be detected (The Castle), and even Sibelius(!): Valse Triste. In spite of its surreal aspects the film has considerable emotional impact through its themes of estrangement, death and lost love. The actors are more than capable, and Yves Montand and Anouk Aimee shine. The separate strands of the narrative are all progressively united as the story unfolds, and the music plays an important role in the drama. The film begins and ends with a haunting melody "The summer flower" sung by Nicole Croisille (sounding just like Julie Cruise -- but this is 1968). Spoken languages: French, Flemish, English Texted languages: Esperanto, English (external) IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063737/ I have written the English subs with the help of the Esperanto timings. The spoken Flemish is mostly left untranslated (only a small part of the whole). Flemish speakers are welcome to complete the translation. This is a medium quality TV rip, and there is some ghosting. This excellent film really deserves a high quality print, and hopefully this will happen in the not-too-distant future. ...............................................................................
