Synopsis

Louis Ruinard, an extremely famous French filmmaker, and his favorite actress Alice d’Alanville, formed one of the most flamboyant couples of the seventies. The five films they made together met with huge success at the time, and lead to an Oscar or two. With passing time, they’ve became cult films.



The couple’s love affair came to an abrupt end. Alice disappeared from Louis’ life one day, without him ever knowing why. She returned to her native England, where she rapidly married a young lord, with whom she had a son, Paul. In leaving Louis, she also put an end to her film career, dedicating herself exclusively to the theater. She’s become a legend in her own country, ennobled by the Queen.

Thirty years on, when Louis arrives in London to make his thirty-fourth film – he’s chosen England because the film is a “comedy about hypocrisy and frustration” – the organizers of the BAFTAs decide to honor him with a Lifetime Achievement award. And naturally, they ask Alice to present it to him.



Désaccord parfait is a romantic comedy centered round two monstrously proud and talented people who passed each other by. They’d never admit it, but neither of them ever got over it. The film recounts the path – fraught with pitfalls – that both will take before – perhaps – getting together again. With a few surprises thrown in.

Twice Upon A time (Désaccord parfait) Film Review

Co-written and directed by Antoine de Caunes , Twice Upon a Time is a simple romantic comedy with bite.



The title sequence cleverly reveals through still images, the love affair between famed London actress Alice and lauded French director Louis. The couple met in the 70's and embarked on a passionate 5-year affair, which abruptly ended when Alice walked out of the relationship.



Thirty years on, they are once again thrown together when Alice is asked to present Louis with a lifetime achievement award. Louis is still deeply in love with his muse and has never gotten over her… Alice on the other hand is still full of resentment and rage.



The dialogue is laced with faced paced repartee as Alice and Louis do their best to undermine each other and the humour is at times screwball in flavour. The script is a little clichéd, but its two stars are so witty and acerbic that all predictability can be forgiven.



The magnificent Charlotte Rampling is impeccable as Alice. It comes as no surprise that the part was written for her. She oozes style and charm and is breathtakingly cutting in her deadpan reactions. Rampling is beautifully matched by French actor Jean Rochefort . And their two performances, together with the great Ian Richardson really do elevate this film.
