My favorite type of mystery centers on unraveling the victim's past, piece by piece, until the motive and the killer ultimately emerge. This book is squarely in that tradition, and solving the puzzle involves a trip to Canada, where more victims, whose deaths had been classified as accidents, are uncovered. A great plot though the ending seems a bit implausible. I didn't give this four stars because I find some of the dialog very antiquated and stiff. Having lived in Yorkshire for 3 years, I find that Reginald Hill's books ring true, while Turnbull's characters sound a little off. Just my impression.  Peter Turnbull is the author of nineteen previous novels and numerous works of short fiction. He worked for many years as a social worker in Glasgow before returning to his native Yorkshire.
