Children happily play in the surf as their dad, laughing behind the camera, records the moment. "Another day in paradise," he sighs on the soundtrack, oblivious to the fact that their holiday would become unforgettable for the most awful of reasons. This was Boxing Day, 2004, by the Indian Ocean. Using camcorder footage taken by amateurs - holiday-makers and locals - the programme pieces together those cataclysmic events, after an earthquake erupted on the sea bed, sending a deadly tidal wave that claimed more than 250,000 lives and destroyed countless homes throughout Thailand and Sri Lanka. Of course, no one had any idea of what was to come as they recorded good times on the beach and on diving trips. When the wave came, it was devastating. Footage records a huge muddy black wave of debris, cars and bodies sweeping through small towns and leaving nothing behind. As one villager says, "It felt like the end of the world."
