I have not found a recording of this group which is not in mono (not to mention the fact that any recording of this group is difficult to find). This may partly account for the fact that this wonderful group is largely forgotten now. The other factor is the quality of this group's playing - something which is very difficult to define in a few words. A clue to understanding this quality lies with the recordings the trio left us of the three piano trios of Schumann. To date, the Trio di Bolzano has no peers when it comes performances of these great works. The second movement of Schumann's 2nd Trio is given the performance indication: "Mit innigem Ausdruck" - literally: "With heartfelt expression". The adjective "innigem", however, translates alone as "intimate" ... and here we have the quality which describes (1) much of Schumann's music, (2) an important aspect of this group's playing in general, and (3) a quality which I'd wager is simply an "endangered species" because fewer and fewer have the time or understanding for it. It's how things get lost, forgotten - and not seen or heard to begin with. ________________________ LP transfers of above material. Includes covers, labels and notes. Sharing Widget |
