Game Description:
Tournament of Legends is still a fighter but High Voltage has traded in historical realism for a more colorful backdrop pulling inspiration from Greek and Roman mythology. The original art style felt overly restrictive, Matt Corso, Art Director for High Voltage explained to me. The team decided to be more creative and pursue a style inspired by Ray Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans. In Legends, there are ten playable characters drawn from mythology. Each of them has their own unique motivation for setting out on a journey of revenge against Thanatos, the game's ultimate villain. When playing single player, each character will have their own story sequence explaining their history and relationship to Thanatos and revealing each story's dramatic conclusion if you manage to beat him.
Eight of the ten characters were playable in New York, with two being held back as secret unlockables. You can play as the standard-issue gladiator, a lurking samurai with a floating spirit ball helper, a Medussa-like Gorgon, a stone golem who think he's Jupiter incarnate, an ax-wielding minotaur in shiny blue armor, and a bronze mech creature that looks like he's made of clockwork gears. Each character can have three different weapon sets (light, medium, and heavy weapons), which you'll choose in the set-up screen before each fight. You won't have these weapons from the outset, they become unlocked as you defeat other characters and take their weapons.
As with The Conduit, High Voltage has focused on a control scheme that suits as many different play-styles as possible. The default setting is very motion-centric. The Wii Remote and the Nunchuk control your right and left side attacks respectively. Each can be swung vertically and horizontally for a corresponding attack. Holding down the B button makes any attack slower but more powerful. Holding the A button and swinging the remote unleashes exaggerated special attacks that will deplete your Specials meter.
You can fire projectiles with the C button, perform a dodge by holding B and flicking the analog stick. Blocks are done with the Z button, and if you time a block properly you'll knock your opponent off-balance for a short while. Characters have a standard heath bar, but there's also a separate armor indicator, which is shown as a green outline around your character's icon in the upper left-hand corner. As you take damage you'll see your armor fall away bit by bit and the meter will go from green to yellow to red.
