Tomas Luis de Victoria - Missa O quam gloriosum, Miss Ave maris stella - David Hill, Westminster Cathedral Choir (1983) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 266.39 MB)
DescriptionIt's a hideous portrait transcription, but that's all we currently have of one of Spain's greatest 16th century composers of sacred music. Tomas Luis de Victoria mastered the Franco-Flemish tradition and brought to it his own intense mysticism, and an ability to slowly increase tension through controlled rhythmic pulse. Unlike many of his French and English contemoporaries he wasn't given to elaborate counterpoint, but preferred homophony and Italianate extremes of contrast. This gives his works a theatrical quality that occasionally brings Goya's religious paintings to mind. His masses are best known, though his motets occasionally are heard, as well. This recording features two of his best known masses. Bio, Latin text and English translations enclosed.
