"The Uniforms of the United States Navy" (1964) has never been equaled since its publication 48 years ago, almost half a century. While some have produced beautiful "coffee table" book profusely illustrated with colour photographs of seamen, petty officers, warrant officers and commissioned officers in their splendid uniforms, documentation of when an item of insignia or uniform was added or changed does not come close to Captain Tily's documentation. Never mind the pictures are black and white, they could not have been otherwise as photos were black and white until colour photography came in on its own during the late 1920s to the 1940s. This book has the 1852 and later uniform regulations and if you are a researcher, colletor or re-enactor, you need this book for reference; you will need to get several copies as you'll wear it out looking at it over and over and picking up details you missed the first time around, sort of like taking mid-term and final exams over again, you get more right answers, hopefully to make it through the semester!
