Check out usenet newsgroups (such as alt.binaries.multimedia) - 4.4GB is normal for 720p, and 8GB is the norm for 1080p.

(Even more annoying is the fact that they're often ISO or VOB files)

There's no rules to file size other than some old ones set by the groups themselves which have nothing to do with the rip itself. You do realize a normal dvd is over 4GB. I bet you'd crap your pants if you new what size blu-rays are before they get ripped. When I was on usenet it was common to see images of Blu-ray discs around 60 GBs. The best rip is one that keeps the size down as much as possible without sacrificing quality and PublicHD does it the best.
