L'arbitro di serie A Carmelo Lo Cascio di Acireale, dove vive con la moglie Laura e un figlio che lo contesta; dove possiede un'avviata stazione di servizio; e dove, infine, vuole costruire un motel - ha il culto della propria professione, in cui si ritiene infallibile e incorruttibile e alla quale subordina persino la sua vita matrimoniale. Chiamato a dirigere il "derby" milanese, conosce, durante una festicciola in casa del suo ricco compaesano Armando Laforgia, la seducente giornalista Elena Sperani. Catturato dalla sua sensualità, Lo Cascio - che è diventato intanto, arbitro internazionale e già spera d'esser chiamato ai campionati del mondo - dimentica la propria integrità e si abbandona a sfrenatezze cui rimedia, per tenersi in forma, con abbondanti dosi di eccitanti. Quando però, pur ignorando la tresca la moglie troppo a lungo trascurata minaccia di lasciarlo, Carmelo si separa per sempre da Elena e torna quell'inflessibile uomo che era, tanto da rifiutare, per paura di compromettersi, il finanziamento di Laforgia per il suo motel. Finirà tuttavia, vittima della sua parossistica fissazione, in una clinica per malati di mente.
