Description

The combined writing talents of novelist H.E. Bates and scripter Eric Ambler produce a fine dramatic vehicle for Gregory Peck's second British-made film which is set in the Burmese jungle in the last days of the war.
After vividly establishing the atmosphere and developing the principal characters, the action switches from the airstrip to mountainous terrain held by the Japs into which Peck has crashed his plane while on a routine flight with his navigator (Lyndon Brook) and a fellow officer (Maurice Denham). From that point the entire incident concentrates on their attempts to get out with Peck in an obstinate mood and insisting that they should not wait by the wreckage for help but should try and reach water.

There are some very tender scenes played in a neighbouring village community in which Peck begins a romantic entanglement with Win Min Than, an exotic yet restrained Burmese beauty. The backgrounds, filmed in Ceylon, are lensed in lush Technicolor
