Trama :

Nel 2022, gli Stati Uniti sono una nazione rinnovata, governata dai Nuovi Padri fondatori dell'America. Per mantenere i tassi di criminalità e disoccupazione bassi, il governo ha istituito un periodo annuale, di dodici ore, chiamato "La Purificazione", durante il quale tutte le attività criminali, tra cui l'omicidio, diventano legali. Le uniche due regole, durante il periodo della Purificazione, stabiliscono il divieto di aggressione ai funzionari governativi di "livello 10" e il divieto di uso delle armi da guerra di grande calibro . Il periodo della Purificazione è stato pensato dal governo come catarsi per tutti i cittadini americani, un rito per liberarsi dalle frustrazioni e dalle emozioni negative, ma anche un'azione mirante a eliminare i deboli della società, come gli homeless.

James Sandin è un ricco imprenditore nel campo della sicurezza domestica. Con sua moglie Mary Sandin lotta con i suoi due figli, che danno alla coppia non pochi problemi riguardo l'educazione: la teenager Zoey si è fidanzata con un ragazzo molto più grande di nome Henry, mentre Charlie contesta la politica e la reale efficacia della pratica della Purificazione. Plot :

In 2022, James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) is a wealthy home security salesman who lives in a nice neighborhood in the streets of San Francisco, California. James has made a fortune selling home security systems—comprising security cameras and metallic "butts" blocking any possible entrance—that are specifically designed for the Purge. One of the neighbors, Mrs. Grace Ferrin (Arija Bareikis), tells James' wife Mary (Lena Headey) the neighbors have been gossiping that the extension on the Sandin family's house was financed by the security systems which her husband had sold them in the first place.

At their heavily-fortified house, Mary struggles with their two children, Zoey (Adelaide Kane) and Charlie (Max Burkholder). Zoey is dating an older boy named Henry (Tony Oller), of whom her father does not approve and Charlie constantly questions the need for the Purge. Charlie has a little robotic video doll on an RC car with a pair of glasses connected to the camera, causing Charlie...
