Ward (Matthew McConaughey) is a journalist for a major newspaper and must return to his small town to the coverage of Hillary Van Wetter Prison (John Cusack), convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of the local sheriff. The problems start when Jack (Zac Efron), his younger brother, becomes involved with Charlotte (Nicole Kidman), and mysterious older woman, who was in contact with the prisoner.
