The mysterious island of Crete has always had a hold on our imagination.

It's the legendary birthplace of Zeus and the realm of the cruel tyrant King Minos, whose beautiful daughter led

Theseus into the underground lair of the terrifying man-beast--the Minotaur.

Just over 100 years ago, an English archaeologist went to the island of Crete to explore the roots of this myth and

discovered instead a sophisticated Bronze Age civilisation that had been lost to history for thousands of years. Arthur

Evans made one of the world's greatest archaeological discoveries when he uncovered the lost world of the people he

called Minoans. Evans' discovery was truly spectacular--a city under the ground.

Bettany Hughes explores Crete's stunning scenery and the remains of the Minoan's prehistoric society--a rich and

strange world where breathtaking art stood alongside human sacrifice and where powerful priestesses and athletic

bull-leapers inhabited maze-like palaces.

But how did it all end? Hughes explores the reasons for the Minoan apocalypse, a series of dramatic and sudden natural

disasters and man-made catastrophes that led to the eclipse of a unique and fascinating civilisation. Weighing up rival

archaeological claims from both past and present, she offers her own insights into an ancient civilisation that gave

dramatic birth to 'Europe's first civilisation' on the Minotaur's Island.
