1942, Nanking. In de nasleep van een aantal aanslagen op hooggeplaatste officials van de Chinese marionettenregering ontbiedt het hoofd van de Japanse geheime dienst een aantal verdachten in een landhuis voor verhoor. Een gespannen kat-en-muis-spelletje ontvouwt zich terwijl de gezochte Chinese codekraker probeert een cruciale boodschap te versturen zonder daarbij zijn/haar identiteit prijs te geven.
