On The Marshall Mathers LP 2, the eighth studio album in a career defined by self-lacerating rage and technical prowess, the 41-year-old rap superstar repeatedly hits the heights of vitriol and hatred that have become his domain in the studio. He spits our epithets like a machine-gun and launches provocation after provocation. He creates a mood of venomous defeat and triumphant despair again and again. Does Eminem even know how to stop?
It doesn't need the closing Evil Twin to make his addiction to vitriol apparent.

Where he once invented entire personalities, from the mocking Slim Shady to the suicidal murderer Stan, he now offers layer upon layer of recrimination and hints of self-awareness. The hunter seeking revenge in opener Bad Guy (overseen in part by Australian producer M-Phazes) is targeting Eminem, while on Asshole he concedes, “Only women that I love are my daughters, and sometimes I rhyme and it sounds like I forget I'm a father”.

Eminem acknowledges his flaws, but embraces them. If there's an underlying message to The Marshall Mathers LP 2 it's that he can't change, and once you sort through this record – a long and uneven journey back to where it starts – you can find the tracks that make that denial worthwhile. There's the anthemic Survival, where the languid hook contrasts with the furious energy of the verses, while Berzerk lets Eminem acknowledge his debt to early Beastie Boys, complete with hard rock samples.
