In contrapposizione alla tendenza del periodo, il soggetto del film presenta la figura dell'alieno come un "diverso", non ostile, ma anzi bisognoso d'aiuto, anticipando temi che saranno poi

sviluppati a partire dagli anni '70 in film come L'uomo che cadde sulla Terra (1976), E.T. l'extraterrestre (1982), Fratello di un altro pianeta (1984) e Starman (1984).
Edgar Ulmer riesce abilmente a sfuggire alle convenzioni del genere (in particolare, non sembra dare molto rilievo alla immancabile parentesi sentimentale tra il giovane reporter e la

ragazza contesa allo scienziato "cattivo") e punta tutto sull'alieno facendolo quasi interprete di una tristezza cosmica con quel suo volto impassibile da maschera africana inquadrato tra

ombre e sfondi nebbiosi.
The Man from Planet X, pur realizzato con pochissimi mezzi e in tempi record (sei giorni) riciclando il set cinematografico di Giovanna d'Arco, è oggi considerato un piccolo classico del

genere.





Poiché il suo pianeta sta morendo per effetto di una glaciazione, un alieno scende sulla Terra per verificare se le condizioni ambientali siano adatte alla sopravvivenza della sua razza. Le

sue intenzioni non sono aggressive: in fondo cerca soltanto aiuto per salvare la sua gente; ma dagli uomini riceve solo incomprensione, e dai militari ...

Storyline

To study a rogue planet heading for a near-miss with Earth, Prof. Elliot sets up an observatory on the foggy moors of a remote Scottish island, with his pretty daughter and Dr. Mears, a

former student with a shady past. Soon after arrival of reporter John Lawrence, a ship from Planet X just happens to land near the observatory. Is the visitor (who actually looks alien)

benevolent? What are Mears' real motives for trying to communicate with it?
