Overview



The Magician's House is a fantasy drama from the BBC based on the four books by William Corlett, the first series of which is based on books 1 and 2. It follows siblings Alice and William Constant, who move to Golden House under the guardianship of their uncle Jack, whilst their parents undertake humanitarian work in Ethiopia. Also in tow is their reluctant cousin Mary Green, who has begrudgingly moved from Canada to live with Jack's new, heavily pregnant partner, Phoebe.



Exploring Golden Valley, the children meet a mysterious old man named Stephen Tyler, a magician who has arrived from the 16th century to ensure Phoebe's baby, last of his descendants, is born in the house along the ley lines to protect the valley's future. However, his greedy young assistant, Matthew Morden, is determined to stop him at any cost by travelling to the future using his rat as a vessel for his soul, and the children must place their trust in a cast of animals that speak - friends to the magician - to stop his plans. All the while, the children must assist local resident Meg Lewis, whose family history is entwined with the house, in the task of saving the rare golden badger population from badger baiters, as the valley's future is in jeopardy without their presence.



The series also features an excellent cast, including the late Ian Richardson as the magician, Neil Pearson as Jack Green, Jennifer Saunders voicing the rat, and Stephen Fry voicing the owl. The children are played well by young actors Steven Webb as William, Olivia Coles as Alice, and Katie Stuart as Mary.

Morden continues to cause trouble both in the past and present when he attempts to create gold for himself, whilst his rat triggers a small fire at Golden House, in turn causing Phoebe's baby to arrive early. But if the baby is born away from the house and ley lines, the magician's efforts will have been for nothing, so it is up to the children to prevent them from leaving.

Spot the dog leads Meg and the children to the badger set, who finds all the badgers have been taken; back at the house, he also kills the rat, against the orders of the magician, but has Morden died with it?
