Il terzo episodio dell’avventura de Il signore degli anelli torna a far impugnare a Howard Shore la celebre e ambita statuetta degli Oscar non solo come Migliore Colonna Sonora, ma anche come Migliore Canzone Originale, Into the West, interpretata da Annie Lennox. Nel capitolo finale che chiude la trilogia di Tolkien, Shore si affida ancora una volta alla London Philharmonic Orchestra, con la quale lavora fianco a fianco ormai da anni, e chiama a raccolta la soprano statunitense Renée Fleming e il famosissimo flautista contemporaneo irlandese Sir James Galway (pari in notorietà solamente a Jean-Pierre Rampal) ampliando così la rosa di collaboratori; ma Shore, che sa come fare sua la trama di un film, va anche oltre: utilizza le voci di Billy Boyd-Pipino e di Viggo Mortensen-Aragorn in due brani della colonna sonora, rendendo così unico e assolutamente riconducibile alla pellicola l’ultimo episodio dell’Anello. Generoso di spunti presi dai primi due capitoli musicali, Il ritorno del Re chiude un cerchio iniziato con La compagnia dell’anello; i riferimenti alla musica classica (Brahms e Wagner) rimangono un caposaldo, ma anche la peculiare descrizione dei personaggi. Il lavoro del musicista canadese è finemente uniformato alla storia (Twilight And Shadow, ad esempio, riflette la decisione di Arwen di negarsi la facoltà dell’essere immortale per seguire il suo cuore) e si arricchisce dei toni di urgenza da parte della Compagnia di adempiere il proprio dovere, e di nuove sfumature che colorano le atmosfere oscure della saga fino a riportare finalmente luce, splendore e speranza nella Terra di Mezzo. La colonna sonora è godibile anche senza il grandioso lavoro di Peter Jackson, ma crediamo fermamente che il film non avrebbe la stessa incredibile potenza epica senza l’opera musicale di Howard Shore.
