Una notte, verso le 3 della mattina, mentre l'investigatore privato Philip Marlowe cerca di dare da mangiare ad un gatto schizzinoso e recalcitrante, riceve una visita dal suo migliore

amico Terry Lennox che gli chiede un passaggio da Los Angeles a Tijuana, al confine tra California e Messico; Marlowe accetta. Mentre sta tornando a casa, due detective della polizia lo

stanno aspettando, accusando Terry Lennox di aver ucciso la sua ricca moglie Sylvia Lennox. Rifiutandosi di credere che il suo migliore amico sia un assassino, Marlowe non vuole fornire

risposte ai detective, che lo arrestano con l'accusa di favoreggiamento: dopo tre giorni in prigione la polizia lo rilascia poiché Terry Lennox si è suicidato in Messico; un caso aperto e

subito chiuso per la polizia e la stampa, ma la versione ufficiale non sembra convincere Marlowe.



Chain-smoking, wisecracking private eye Philip Marlowe drives a buddy from LA to the Tijuana border and returns home to an apartment full of cops who arrest him for abetting the murder of

his friend's wife. After Marlowe's release, following the reported suicide in Mexico of his friend, a beautiful woman hires him to locate her alcoholic and mercurial husband. Then, a

hoodlum and his muscle visit to tell Marlowe that he owes $350,000, mob money the dead friend took to Mexico. Marlowe tails the hood, who goes to the house of the woman with the

temperamental husband. As Marlowe pulls these threads together, his values emerge from beneath the cavalier wisecracking..................
