Page's twist is to make it a deeply chilling ghost horror, rather than a conventional or splatter comedy horror. THE LOCALS is set in the dead of night in the scariest part of heartland New Zealand, and pits likeable, innocent young people against the things humans fear the most - being lost, being in the dark and being chased by an unknown, menacing foe. It's the dead versus the living, played out against an inescapable curse with escalating levels of fear.
