Na hun avontuur in de jungle van Colombia lijken schrijfster Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) en Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) van een onbekommerd leventje te genieten. Maar schijn bedriegt: Joan heeft namelijk last van ‘writers block’ en Colton kan maar moeilijk wennen aan het leven zonder avontuur. Als Joan de kans krijgt om een aantal weken naar het Midden-Oosten te reizen om daar de biografie van een sjeik te schrijven, is voor Jack de maat vol. Ze besluiten om voorlopig uit elkaar te gaan. Maar dat duurt niet lang, want al gauw blijkt dat Joan gevaar loopt. En dus trekt Jack erop uit, samen met partner-tegen-wil-en-dank Ralph (Danny DeVito), om zijn oude liefde letterlijk en figuurlijk te redden.

This is the sequel to "Romancing the Stone" where Jack and Joan have their yacht and easy life, but are gradually getting bored with each other and this way of life. Joan accepts an invitation to go to some middle eastern country as a guest of the sheik, but there she is abducted and finds her- self involved with the "jewel". Jack decides to rescue her with his new partner Ralph. They all go from one adventure to another... What is the story of this "jewel"?
