QUOTES

Opening Narration:

(Teaser:)

Shortly before dawn, a spaceship landed near Phillipsburg, Colorado, bringing to Earth a strange and ominous experimental cargo: two dozen spores. After exposure to the Earth atmosphere, each will develop and grow into a perfectly formed alien. On a success of this experiment rests the possibility of future shipments, numbering hundreds, perhaps thousands of alien invaders, and possibly the future of the human race.

(First Act:)

Several hours ago, a radio news cast carried a strange report: A Deputy Sheriff in Phillipsburg reported an accident in which the passengers vanished in a burst of flame. A policeman's delusion, or evidence of invaders? David Vincent travels to Phillipsburg to discover which.

Closing Narration:

The destruction of the alien spores becomes a major victory for David Vincent, in a continuing relentless war in which victories are few.

NOTE

A personal 'favorite' episode of some, with similarities to the 50's classic sci-fi film 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'...well written, has a very 'creepy' feel to it, concludes with an excellent climactic scene as Vincent traps the Invaders and their plants in a greenhouse...also noteworthy is the cast in this episode, which includes multi-Oscar winner Gene Hackman in an early TV role and future M*A*S*H regular Wayne Rogers.

REVIEW

(from www.tv.com by member "jmaci")

"The Spores" starts off with a bang and never lets up. This is a memorable, series-defining episode. Great character actor John Randolph (one year after his moving appearance in the film "Seconds") plays a police officer who witnesses the burnouts of two aliens amid the wreck of their van along a country road. The van's driver, played very nicely by young Gene Hackman, escapes from the wreck with a metal suitcase containing spores that will develop into new aliens. Randolph's supervisor (Wayne Rogers) does not believe the older officer's story of disappearing bodies and warns he may be risking his retirement benefits if he submits the report. Enter David Vincent. He has heard of the incident and figures it must involve Invaders. Hackman's suitcase is stolen by young toughs who can't open it. Later, they stash it in a car owned by Mark Miller and Patricia Smith. Miller discards it after the couple squabble about what to do with it. Now it's in the possession of some children who plant the spores in a local greenhouse. There is an eerie scene of the spores beginning to grow that may recall "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1956 or 1978 versions). This is an exciting, well-acted episode that makes a good case for the greatness of the series.
