Le prime idee di un film basato su Lo Hobbit risalgono al 1995, quando Peter Jackson e Fran Walsh espressero interesse nel realizzare una trilogia formata da un film basato su Lo Hobbit e due su Il Signore degli Anelli[1]. Lo sviluppo della trasposizione ebbe fine quando Harvey Weinstein e Saul Zaentz informarono Jackson che i diritti di distribuzione de Lo Hobbit erano in possesso della compagnia di produzione United Artists. Weinstein tentò di acquistare i diritti dalla United Artists ma non ebbe successo; Weinstein convinse allora Jackson a provare ad adattare per il grande schermo Il Signore degli Anelli[2], che verrà poi prodotto dalla New Line Cinema........
