Synopsis

How is it possible that children living in the remotest part of the Mongolian steppes know who Ronaldo is? This film tells the adventurous story of three heroes, none of whom have ever met, but who nevertheless have two things in common: firstly, they all live in the farthest-flung corners of the planet and, secondly, they are all three determined to see on TV the final in Japan of the 2002 World Cup between Germany and Brazil. The protagonists in this 'global' comedy are: a family of Kazakh nomads from Mongolia, a camel caravan of Tuaregs in the Sahara, and a group of Indians in the Amazon. They all live about 500 kilometres away from the next town – and the next television – making their task a particularly daunting one. Nevertheless, these inventive people possess the resourcefulness and the willpower to achieve their goal.

Reception

La Gran final was screened at the African Film Festival of Cordoba. It won several international awards and was selected to participate, among others, in the Berlin International Film Festival. The film was an official selection at the Copenhagen International Film Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh, the World Cinema Festival, Cape Town and the Desert Nights Filmfest, Rome. It was nominated for Best Film at the Málaga Spanish Film Festival.

This feature film from the Film Movement series follows the extraordinary efforts of three indigenous tribes to watch the 2002 World Cup final between Germany and Brazil. Spanish documentary filmmaker Gerardo Olivares uses non-actors and makes the most of the stunning scenery. Set in Mongolia, Niger, and the Amazon, members of these diverse groups are passionate fans of professional soccer. In Mongolia, a family of nomads “borrows” electricity to power their TV set. When government authorities discover what they are doing, the family must adjust to unexpected guests. In Niger, a camel caravan is slowly traveling to an iron pole of sorts (it marks where a tree once stood), so it can be used as an antenna. Worried that they will miss most of the game, the soccer enthusiasts convince a truck driver and his passengers to make a detour to the desired spot, leaving behind the camels with an unlucky watchman. In the Amazon, men of a small Indian community struggle with a makeshift satellite set-up. Eventually, they trek though the rain forest to find an alternate location to view the broadcast.

Although this story is fictional and some of the scenarios verge on the ridiculous, one still gets a sense of what everyday life is like for these people. The idea that soccer has a unifying quality that can break down cultural and social barriers is charming. This is a unique global comedy, providing glimpses of far-off lands.
