The whole thing that made this film memorable was the deliberate misuse/mispnunciation of British place-names. However, the DVD release that StudioCanal has been touting for the past 20 years or so, has those defining scenes purposely cut out ! That's right: the very scenes that made the film what it was, have been purposely excised, even using cutting room staff to provide fake transition scenes. I have managed to re-integrate those missing scenes from old off-air BBC 1980s videotape. The quality of the VHS recordings is pretty poor and you can certainly "see the join" where the missing bits are reinstated. The print from which the DVD was taken is pretty spotty too. I've had a go at trying to clean things up. However, I did all this using free tools (HandBrake, Avidemux, VirtualDub) so I was a bit limited in what I could do. I've presented this at 720x592, but the reinstated footage doesn't really do this resolution justice. I tried to compress it down to <700MB, but the resultant quality was not good enough. I'm a bit confused now. The resultant length with my reinstatements is about 1:10, but IMdB claims 79 minutes. Are there any other cuts of which I am unaware ? Is this a 25/24fps thing ?
