La storia è incentrata sulla doppia vita di Christine Reade, la studentessa di legge di Chicago che, attratta dalla possibilità di guadagnare molti soldi, di notte decide di trasformarsi in Chelsea, una escort d'alto bordo. Christine scoprira però molto presto di essersi impigliata in una rete complessa fatta d'intrighi e tradimenti e da cui è difficile tornare indietro.
La protagonista e Riley Keough, attrice, modella nonche nipote di Elvis Presley (che abbiamo già visto al cinema in Mad Max: Fury Road e Magic Mike). La storia della serie è molto differente da quella del film del 2009, come ha dichiarato lo stesso Soderbergh : «abbiamo preso il titolo e abbiamo ricominciato da capo».
