In 1903, a young Scots woman goes to join her diplomat fiance in Manchuria. She marries him, and finds herself in a war zone. Disenchanted with her husband, she falls in love with a married Japanese nobleman and bears him a son. She carves out a life for herself in Japanese society despite the hardships and ostracism she faces as both a Westerner and a woman. Based on the book by Oswald Wynd.



The programme was co-produced by the BBC, NHK (Japan) and WGBH (Boston). This was the first BBC production to be filmed in High-Definition, though high definition this version is not.



This series has never been released on Video or DVD and it is difficult to find copies, otherwise I wouldn't have even thought of distributing this incomplete and low quality collection. If you have a better or complete copy please consider making it available.



Quality:



This is from a low quality home VHS recording and the video quality is poor, but it is watchable ... though read on.



There are a few video glitches, but not too many. The first 4 minutes of Episode 1 are unwatchable, containing a number of complete video break-downs. But after the first 4 minutes it settles down.



Audio is generally OK. There are some sub-second blips, the occasional crackle and pop, but again if you ignore the problems with the first 4 minutes I think you will find the audio reasonable enough, bearing in mind the overall low quality of this version.



Episode 2 is incomplete. The part included here is the first 29 minutes, the last 23 minutes are missing.
