From Wiki:

The Gaslight Anthem is an American punk rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, formed in 2006. The band consists of Brian Fallon (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Rosamilia (guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion).

The Gaslight Anthem released their debut album, Sink or Swim, on XOXO Records in May 2007, and their second album, The '59 Sound, on SideOneDummy Records in August 2008. The band's third album, American Slang, was released on June 15, 2010. Their fourth album, Handwritten, was released on July 24, 2012, on Mercury Records.

The '59 Sound 2008

The '59 Sound is the second studio album by American rock band The Gaslight Anthem, released on August 19, 2008 on SideOneDummy Records. In December 2008, eMusic named The '59 Sound the best album of 2008.[1] NME rated it as the 47th best album of the year.[2] The title track was number 62 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008.[3] In July 2009, following Bruce Springsteen's guest appearances with the band at Glastonbury and Hyde Park, sales of the album doubled.

Punknews.org gave the album a very positive review, stating: "The ’59 Sound offers more poetically told tales of love, dancing, driving and girls called Maria, set against the quaint American rock’n’roll backdrop that band have been constructing throughout their previous two releases." Allmusic gave the album a mostly positive review and concluded that "If Fallon often comes off as a youthful Springsteen wannabe on The '59 Sound, he also happens to be pretty good at it." Absolutepunk.net raved about the album, saying that it's "Packed full of vivid imagery and storytelling that resembles "Born to Run"/"Darkness on the Edge of Town"-era Springsteen, "The '59 Sound" is an impeccable work of punk-rock art where each listen offers something new, never taking any hint of imagination or personal effect away from the listener; this is the album The Killers wanted to make with "Sam's Town" but were unsuccessful at."

Regarding the differences between The '59 Sound and their first full-length album, Sink or Swim, guitarist Alex Rosamilia noted that, "For Sink or Swim, we had a week or so and what we brought to the studio. For [this] last record we had about 5 weeks and quite the arsenal of gear to tear through. Which did lead to a couple ideas I don't think we would've had otherwise."[12]

The album was released on August 19, 2008 and peaked on the Billboard 200 at #70. [13] A 7" vinyl single was released on July 22, featuring the title track and the song "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" on the B-side. "Old White Lincoln" was released as the 2nd single on December 1, 2008 in the UK. Opening track "Great Expectations" was released as the 3rd single in the UK on March 23, 2009.

Allmusic described the album's sound as a "heartland rock version of Social Distortion."

American Slang 2010

American Slang is the third studio album by New Jersey based rock group The Gaslight Anthem. It was released on June 15, 2010 on SideOneDummy Records, which released their previous album, The '59 Sound. The album was produced by 'The '59 Sound producer Ted Hutt.

Fallon stated in an NYC in-studio session, "All these songs came to me in my head. I didn't sit down at the guitar or piano or write lyrics, they all just were kind of there one day." Lead singer songwriter Brian Fallon said that American Slang will move away from the 1950s inspired sound of The '59 Sound. He began writing for the new album in the summer of 2009 while on tour in support of The '59 Sound. “American Slang is just what we do. That’s who we are,” Fallon says. “You’re presented with this American Dream and all these American possibilities—and then there’s the reality of what actually happens with your life.” In response to the obvious influences Tom Waits, The Clash, The Supremes and most notably Bruce Springsteen have had on their previous records, he went on to add "This [record] is really the one where we said, ‘All right, well, we’ve got our influences. They’ll speak naturally, but what do we have to say on our own? What does it feel like to put on our own shoes and clothes? What do we sound like, and what’s our story?'"

The album was released on June 15, 2010 on SideOneDummy Records. It is the band's second release for the label. The album opened at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, making it the band's highest charting album to date. It sold over 26,000 copies in its first week of release. It also debuted at No. 18 and No. 12 on the U.K. and Canadian charts, respectively. The band released the first single from the album, "American Slang", on their Facebook page on March 23, 2010, along with a full tracklist and cover art.

Uncut magazine (July 2010 issue) gave American Slang a 5 star rating and declared it its 'album of the month'. "American Slang delivers spectacularly on all expected fronts. Everything that was great about The '59 Sound is here, but the sound is even bigger, epic without getting blustery." Rock Sound magazine gave the album a 9/10 and also declared it its 'album of the month'. In December 2010, Exclaim! named American Slang the No. 19 Pop & Rock Album of the year.[17] Exclaim! writer Ben Conoley said "American Slang is somehow your old man and your best friend all at once." Big Cheese magazine (June 2010 issue) also gave the album 5 stars, saying that "The Gaslight Anthem have created the all-American album that travels by keeping its subject matter to that which everyone can relate to: the pain of a broken heart, salvation from the radio and love by the lights of the bar. The record is a perfect marriage of expert storytelling, superb musicianship and classic melodies."

Classic Rock magazine gave the album 8/10 and declared that "New and old fans alike will be speaking American Slang this summer." The album reached the No. 3 position on the UK midweek album charts during its first week. The album debuted at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, moving 27,000 copies,[18] and was the No. 1 independent album for that week.[19] "Rolling Stone" magazine gave the album 3½ stars out of five, saying that "American Slang arrives with serious advance buzz: The choruses are more sculpted, but the band's tough-as-leather rush is as hard as ever, and Fallon howls so hard, he sounds like he's aiming to get a section of the Jersey Turnpike named after him." "Rolling Stone" named the album's song "The Diamond Church Street Choir" at No. 39 on their list of 50 Best Songs Of 2010. The album currently holds a Metascore of 80% on Metacritic, based on 28 professional reviews.

Handwritten 2012

Handwritten is the fourth studio album by American rock band The Gaslight Anthem, released on July 20, 2012 by Mercury Records. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, the album was preceded by the single "45", and features liner notes by Nick Hornby.

As of July 2010, Brian Fallon said he was already working on new material for a fourth album.[1] Subsequently, Fallon stated on his blog that the band would start writing their record in January 2011[2] However, prior to playing on Pinkpop in June 2011, Fallon stated that they had just started working on the new album and that it wouldn't be released for at least a few months.[3] In the same interview Fallon said only one song was finished so far, referring to "Biloxi Parish" which they performed on stage at Pinkpop 2011 as well as Rock Am Ring 2011. Fallon stated that the band's next record will sound closer to their breakthrough record, The '59 Sound, rather than American Slang.[4] During this time, Fallon was also working with good friend Ian Perkins, putting the finishing touches on their side project The Horrible Crowes.

On October 6, 2011, The Gaslight Anthem announced via Facebook that they had officially signed with Mercury Records. They stated that they were sorry to leave their friends at SideOneDummy Records, but felt that the change was necessary for their musical career.

On October 14, 2011, The Gaslight Anthem announced that their last show before going into the studio to record their new album would be on December 9 at the Asbury Park Convention Hall.[5]

On January 12, 2012, the band announced via their Twitter feed that they would be recording the following week in Nashville.[6] Recording took place at Blackbird Studios, Nashville.[7] On February 17, 2012, they announced that recording of original songs for the album had been completed and they would soon be recording b-sides and covers.[8] It was announced on February 22, 2012, via the band's Twitter feed that their fourth album would be titled Handwritten.[9]

The band announced on their official Facebook page on April 26, 2012 that the album's lead single would be "45", and it would be receive its worldwide premiere as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio 1 on April 30.[10] On April 30, 2012, the band announced that the album would be released July 23, 2012 in the UK and July 24 in the US.
