The Floating City - Sonatas, Canzonas & Dances by Castello & Picchi - His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts (1997) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 301.5 MB)
DescriptionSomething of a musical revolution took place in Europe in the latter part of the 16th century. Under the patronage of very wealthy Italian nobility, a number of composer-theorists sought to bring a new expressiveness to their art through returning to its roots in the countryside. They created a newer, less heavily structured series of forms to provide this. The pair of composers on this recording were among those who created the earliest sonatas, which at the time were open-structured vehicles for display, in a variety of movements that included dances, countrapuntal agility, dramatic recitatives, and emotional arias. The title, The Floating City, refers to Venice, one of the centers of the new art. His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts is in turn one of the foremost brass ensembles of modern times specializing in Baroque music. Transfers are now made at 256 kBits/s, directly from the disc.
