26 men are chosen to participate in the roles of guards and prisoners in a psychological study, for which each participant is to receive $14,000 after two weeks. Included is Travis (Adrien Brody), and Barris (Forest Whitaker), who met at the introduction of the study. The group is driven to an isolated building that will be used for the prison and left there by the doctor in charge, under the basic rules of prisoners must clean their plate at every meal, prisoners cannot touch the guards, and the guards are in charge. The building is under constant surveillance, and if excessive force is used by anyone involved the experiment will end.
