George Clooney wanted to play the role of 'Jack' in Sideways, Alexander Payne's last film. Payne turned him down, saying that he wanted someone lesser known for the role.
Near the beginning of the film, Matt says "I don't want my daughters growing up entitled and spoiled. And I agree with my father: you give your children enough money to do something but not enough to do nothing". This is actually a paraphrase from one of the world's wealthiest men, and the richest person in the world in 2008, Warren Buffett. In reference to how much money he would bequeath to his children, Buffett replied: "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing."
This movie represents the second time that actor-writer-director George Clooney has been Oscar nominated for two different pictures in the same year. In 2006, Clooney was nominated for both Syriana (won Best Supporting Actor) and Good Night, and Good Luck. (Best Director & Best Original Screenplay). In 2012, Clooney was nominated for both The Ides of March (Best Adapted Screenplay) and The Descendants (Best Actor). In between these two double features, Clooney received Best Actor Academy Award nominations for two more films, Michael Clayton and Up in the Air.
