Jornalistas do jornal London Daily Express investigam relatos de fenômenos climáticos estranhos que ocorrem em todo o mundo. Por toda a Inglaterra, as temperaturas estão aumentando e os melhores cientistas do Centro Meteorológico se recusam a dar qualquer explicação oficial. O repórter de ciência Bill Maguire e o colunista Peter Stenning saem a procura de informações. Quando Peter começa um romance com a secretária Jeannie Craig, ele descobre com ela certas pistas de que realmente houve um acobertamento. Duas bombas nucleares haviam sido explodidas, uma no Pólo Norte pela União Soviética, outra no Pólo Sul pelos Estados Unidos. Ninguém notou antes, mas as investigações levam a crer que as duas explosões mudaram a órbita da Terra e agora ela está em curso de colisão com o Sol.
