The show offers an unprecedented insight into the reality of life at sea with deep-sea fishing being one of the most dangerous jobs in Britain.
Episode one focuses on the hard-bitten crew of the Govenek of Ladram (“Hope of Ladram” in Cornish). We join the trawler as it chugs towards the teeming waters of the Continental shelf in a last-gasp pursuit of a big payday. Along the way the fishermen battle ocean swells and engage in endless flinty banter.
Phil is the skipper of a large gill netter called the Govenek of Ladram. He runs a tight ship, wanting his crew to work hard and eat together as a team. He needs to bring in some new blood and train them up before his most experienced deckhands move to an easier boat or retire. Louis is 21 and on the dole and in the past has found it hard to feel part of a group and make friends. He takes part in a deckie training course, hoping that he can find a career and also a crew who will accept him as part of their own.
